The situation in New Zealand is a little different to the Australian experience. New Zealand has no domestic manufacturing, so imports make up the full supply. Imports spiked in March 2021, and again in September 2021. In September imports were 56.8% than the prior month to total 13.5 kt.

The chart below shows monthly imports, as well as the year-on-year changes in monthly imports.

The first table below the chart shows that on a quarterly basis, total imports were up 117.6% over the quarter ending September, compared with the same period in 2020. The second table shows that on an annualised basis, total imports were up 5.6% over the year-ended September 2021.
